International Joseph Joachim Competition Announces Increase in Prizes, Awards
The world of music competitions can sometimes be confusing. There seem to be more and more competitions every year, and it can be hard to keep them all straight. For violinist, the Tchaikovsky Competition naturally comes to mind, as well as the Sibelius in Helsinki and the Queen Elisabeth in Brussels. There are also many others vying for international recognition. One of the most notable up-and-coming competition is the International Joseph Joachim Competition in Hannover, Germany. This competition has recently jumped to the top of many violinists’ list due a recent upgrade to the prize pot: a total of $184,000 in cash prizes, debut concerts and CD contracts, and, for the winner, the loan of a Guadagnini.
According to the competition’s website, this now makes the Joachim Competition the highest remunerating violin contest in the world. This year, it will run from September 30th to October 13th, marking the eighth time the competition has been held. The Joachim’s advertising department is certainly putting in a strong effort, with a new documentary being released about the 2009 prize winners:
The stakes are clearly getting higher. But only time will tell how the winners will be. Who knows, maybe it will be one of our readers!
