“Maazel” Guadadgnini of 1783 Up for Auction Next Month

Looking for a new violin? Tarisio might have a suggestion. The New York based auction house recently announced that it will be selling the violin owned by Lorin Maazel for the last 66 years. Although Maazel is primarily known today as a conductor—currently the music director of the Munich Philharmonic—he is also an accomplished violinist.  The instrument will now be sold, however, in Tarisio’s November auction.

When asked about his treasured violin, Maazel had this to say:

“I first played this Guadagnini when I was 15, and it has been my close companion ever since. We are especially happy that proceeds of its sale will go toward enabling young instrumentalists, singers and conductors to develop their professional careers.”

This particular Guadagnini was made in 1783 in Turin, Italy. Instruments from this period of Guadagnini’s life are noted to be of exceptional quality, representing the maker’s best work.

The proceeds from the auction will benefit the endowment of the Castleton Festival, which was founded by Maazel and his wife Dietlinde Turban Maazel in 2009. The hope is that the sale of the violin will enable young singers, instrumentalists, and conductors, to further the development of their professional careers. Tarisio estimates that the sale for this lot will be between $800,000 and $1, 200,000. So if you’re still interested, now would be the time to place a bid. Only thirteen days left!
