The Irving M. Klein Competition is over. The international string competition was held at The College of Creative Arts at San Francisco State University over the weekend (June 5, 2011). The 8 semi-finalists in the Klein Competition performed at a very high level.
With performers like this Classical Music does not have to worry about its future!
Irving M. Klein Competition Winners
- 1st Prize Mayumi Kanagawa. Violin, student of Robert Lipsett and Arnold Steinhardt.
- 2nd Prize Matthew Allen. Cello, Student of Melissa Kraut
- 3rd Prize Ji-Won Song. Violin, Student of Victor Danchenko
All three performances were absolutely unique and fantastic. Mayumi Kanagawa’s stellar rendition was breath-taking, with an absolutely perfect technique and a wonderful change of style between the Presto from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 4 in A minor Op. 23 to the first movement of the Brahms Violin Concerto. Matthew Allen’s performance of the second movement of the Sinfonia Concertante in E minor, Op. 125 was thrilling, exciting, and played with a full palette of tonal colors. Finally Ji-Won Song‘s performance of the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto was expressed full of her personal style and total conviction.
The audience clearly showed their appreciation for these 3 outstanding performances. Also, congratulations to the fourth prizes winners, Mindy Park (cello, student of Ronald Leonard) and Daniel Cho (violin, student of Hyo Kang).
