James Ehnes Succeeds Toby Saks as Artistic Director of Seattle Chamber Music Society
July 29th was officially proclaimed “Toby Saks Day” this year by the mayor of Seattle. The honor paid tribute to the well-known cellist’s rich service to classical music fans in the Seattle area and worldwide. Thirty years ago she founded the Seattle Chamber Music Society, the organization that puts on the city’s most beloved summer music festival. On Toby Saks Day, Beneroya’s Nordstrom Recital Hall was packed for a series of speeches, video tributes, and musical performances by the likes of James Ehnes, Scott Yoo, William Wolfram, and Stefan Jackiw. The grand finale was a moving rendition of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto Nr. 3 with Toby Saks herself on one of the cello parts. The Chamber Music Society will continue under the artistic direction of the extraordinary violinist James Ehnes.
