Montreal Symphony Orchestra’s New Hall Opens
Just in time for the season’s opening concert, a new hall in Montreal received an official name and opened with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra last Wednesday. After being known only as L’Adresse Symphonique for some time, officials in Quebec announced this week that the new building will be called La Maison Symphonique de Montréal.
The $269 million building seats 2,100 people and is located in Montreal’s Place des Arts, the cultural center of the city, right next door to the Montreal Symphony’s former home, the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletie. The Salle also hosts performances of the Opéra de Montreal, but the larger hall was ultimately too large and acoustically unsatisfactory for the needs of a symphonic ensemble. The acoustics of the hall were designed by acousticians from Artec Consultants and Sound Space Design; the hall’s walls are lined with panels carved from Canadian beechwood.
Montreal inaugurated the hall with numerous speeches and a performance of Beethoven’s ninth symphony, along with works by contemporary composers from Quebec.
