Brianna Richardson

Brianna Richardson, SPT is a doctoral physical therapy student at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. She has given a number of lectures and workshops on injury prevention and musicians’ health for the School of Music at the University of Puget Sound, where she majored in music as a violist. In June 2010, Richardson gave a lecture entitled “Being a Healthy Musician” for the Max Aronoff Viola Institute at Bastyr University. For her undergraduate Honors thesis, Richardson examined methods of structural support used by violinists and violists and conducted a survey on setup trends, the results of which were mentioned in the April 2009 issue of Strad magazine.

Her other publications on musicians’ health include narrative writings in the September 2008 and March 2009 issues of Medical Problems of Performing Artists, the peer-reviewed research journal of the Performing Arts Medicine Association. Richardson also acts as a setup consultant for Lynne Denig and Gary Frisch, two setup specialists in Virginia who design custom chinrests. Her setup clients include violinists and violists across Washington state, Oregon, and Vancouver, BC. Richardson enjoys helping other musicians develop healthy playing habits, and plans to specialize in treating musicians as a physical therapist.
